PROGRAMMED PAPER explores how weaving patterns define a three-dimensional structure. Paper becomes malleable with moisture. I utilize this property of the fibre and further incorporate silk crepe during weaving to form patterns. When exposed to moisture, the hybrid weave naturally folds into a three-dimensional form according to how the silk crepe is integrated. These weaving patterns “program” material behavior into the fabric structure. The pattern of programmable paper can be controlled, but these sculptures also have an unpredictable nature that arises organically when moisture is introduced. While wet, the hybrid weave remains malleable and open to manipulation. Once dried, the structure takes on a permanent form.
